It's right off the busy thoroughfares, making it a relaxing place to stay (with a spa), while also being within walking distance of the action on the Magnificent Mile and all of the River's nightlife North. Environmentally conscious people will probably appreciate how completely eco-friendly the hotel is, if they don't mind small rooms.

Though it's a central location for tourists, the Felix caters to business travelers, with its comfortable, if somewhat cramped, workspaces and modern meeting rooms. The nearby Dana Hotel and Spa doesn't share the sustainable pedigree, but has similar amenities with larger rooms. The hotel's reliance on compact fluorescent light bulbs, sustainable artwork, and rugs made from recycled materials doesn't intrude on its sleek, stylish vibe.
Blown glass orbs hang from the ceiling in the lobby, which is filled with natural light from tall windows and accented by low-wattage accent lighting (the few non-fluorescent bulbs in the hotel). Contemporary armchairs and a glass fireplace make the room elegant and welcoming. The LEED-certified renovation used local, sustainable, and recycled material in the remodel.

The cleaning service uses organic bleach-free cleaning products, and an energy management system based on motion sensors regulates the building's heating. Couples and business travelers are the main clientele; though children are welcome, the elegant setting is more suited to adults. The hotel is centrally located in River North.
Once a warehouse district populated by artists and writers, it is now best known for its high concentration of restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques. The Hotel Felix is on a quiet street, but the area is packed with nightlife, from exclusive clubs to themed chain restaurants.
The Magnificent Mile, an iconic stretch of North Michigan Avenue known for its high-end shopping and famous landmarks, is five blocks away. The Loop, Chicago's most concentrated shopping district across the river, is less than a five-minute drive away. Midway International Airport is about a 30-minute drive southwest, and O'Hare International Airport is 40 minutes to an hour through the busiest traffic to the northwest.

Small rooms designed to meet LEED certification allow for some power-hungry amenities like microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers that some might miss in a four-star hotel room. Plus, the rooms lack for nothing (save floor space), with iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, stylish seating chairs, and work desks with comfortable roll-in chairs.
Some of the furniture shows an excessive amount of wear which may be due to the tight space. Small, modern bathrooms have walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads and L'Occitane toiletries. Some rooms have beautiful views of the Chicago skyline. The hotel's restaurant, Troquet River North, serves French cuisine for breakfast (including weekend brunch), lunch and dinner.
During the day, the lobby bar is a coffee shop serving locally roasted, fair trade coffee and at night it is an intimate cocktail bar. The hotel caters to business travelers with three meeting rooms, all with ergonomically designed seating, audiovisual equipment, and a 24-hour business center with multiple computers and printers.
The spa does not have a sauna or hot tub, but uses organic products in its full range of treatments and massages. The 24-hour fitness center has treadmills, stair climbers, and free weights, all in a room with recycled flooring. The James is one of the best luxury hotels in Chicago and is located in River North, one block from the Magnificent Mile.
